Chicago weather: 2nd round of severe storms could bring high winds, heavy rain | LIVE radar

CHICAGO (WLS) — Severe storms are moving through parts of the Chicago area on Sunday.

The Chicago area is under level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms, primarily during the evening hours on Sunday, ABC7 Chicago Meteorologists Tracy Butler and Jaisol Martinez said.

The main threats are high winds and heavy rain, which could cause flooding. The tornado risk is low, but not zero, Martinez said.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Boone, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, LaSalle, Lake (IL), Lake (IN), Livingston, Lee, McHenry Ogle, Will, Winnebago, Kenosha, Racine and Kenosha counties until 1 a.m. Monday.

A Flood Watch is in effect for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake (IL), Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage and LaSalle counties until 4 a.m. Monday.

A line of thunderstorms moved through the Joliet area just before 9 a.m. before heading toward Northwest Indiana, prompting Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for some south suburban counties.

Those storms brought rain and wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph. Pea-sized hail was also reported.

The Chicago weather forecast calls for severe storms in parts of the area. The heat index is near 100 degrees.

We dried out later Sunday morning, but additional storms are expected materialize northwest of the Chicago area moving moving in between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday, Butler and Martinez said. They are expected to linger between midnight and 2 a.m. Monday.

Those storms are arriving as hot and muggy conditions continue in Chicago with the heat index near 100 degrees.

Monday is poised to be the hottest and most uncomfortable in a string of warm and humid days. High temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s and with the heat index possibly reaching 105 degrees.

Storms are also likely on Monday afternoon with a possibility of damaging winds and a flooding threat. The Chicago area is under a level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather on Monday.
