A South Australian father who was caught with drugs in Bali has thanked his lawyers and family as he narrowly avoided years in prison.

Instead of being sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence, Port Lincoln father Troy Smith will remain in Indonesia for a six-month rehabilitation program and will likely return home when it’s over.

The 49-year-old had his final court appearance today over the 3.1 grams of methamphetamine that led to his arrest in April.

A judge found him guilty of possessing the drugs found in his hotel room for personal use, after he was initially charged with drug trafficking and faced the possibility of the death penalty.

His charges were downgraded after his lawyers, including John Mcleod, who previously assisted Schapelle Corby, successfully argued that he required treatment rather than incarceration.

After his sentencing, he publicly expressed his gratitude.

“I just want to thank my lawyers,” he said.
