A woman is in hospital after a stranger allegedly pushed her onto the tracks at a busy Melbourne train station.

Emergency crews were called to Richmond Railway Station just before 4pm today, where commuters had pulled the woman off the tracks.

She was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and taken to Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

It’s understood an unknown man pushed her from behind as she waited on Platform 4.

Police said the man fled the scene and has not yet been found.

“Parties are not known to each other, and the circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage,” police said.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, crowds of commuters at neighbouring train stations like the Southern Cross are facing delays.

A trespasser in the Flinders Street area also added to the chaos, causing delays of up to 25 minutes.
