A man has been arrested after a man was found dead at a popular swimming and fishing spot in southeast Melbourne.

Police rushed to Frankston Pier off Pier Promenade about 6am today after receiving reports a man was being assaulted.

They arrived to find a man injured and unresponsive on the pier. He died at the scene.

A second man, who was at the foreshore nearby, was arrested shortly later.

He is currently being questioned by police as the area was blocked off and a crime scene was established. 

Homicide detectives are investigating and are not looking for anyone else in relation to the man’s death.

“It is also believed the parties involved were not known to one another,” police said.
