‘That’s not right’: Abusive boyfriend killed 64-year-old man who tried to stop him from attacking girlfriend, deputies say

A 64-year-old man was out celebrating his daughter’s engagement when his life reached the beginning of its tragic end. According to deputies, Donald Storie saw a man battering a woman.

“That’s not right,” Storie said on hearing the woman screaming for help, according to court documents viewed by Law&Crime.

But when he stepped in, the attacker fatally punched him. The 64-year-old died 23 days later from complications of his injuries. Deputies in Orange County, Florida, blame Jordan De’Ante Talley, 27, who was formally charged Friday with manslaughter for allegedly killing Storie, and for domestic battery in which he allegedly attacked his girlfriend.

Authorities claim the incident occurred on March 31, at approximately 1:40 a.m. at the intersection of Robinson Street and Magnolia Avenue in downtown Orlando.

Surveillance footage showed a man, later identified as Talley, “battering” a woman, they said.

The video allegedly depicted him pulling her by her hair, throwing her to the ground, stopping her from walking away from him, and throwing her to the ground again.

Storie’s daughter had told investigators that when he heard the woman’s screaming for help, he said, “That’s not right.”

He headed over to the woman, who was being attacked by the man identified as Talley.

From the description of surveillance footage in court documents:

…the male [Talley] and female can be seen on the southeast corner of Robinson Street and Magnolia Avenue. Shortly after, Donald is observed walking south bound on Magnolia Avenue, crossing Robinson Street in the direction of the male and female. The male and female are just outside of the camera view, when Donald stops walking, then suddenly falls backwards. The actual punch cannot be seen as Donald is at the edge of camera view; nothing in front of him can be seen.

Using surveillance footage, officers tracked the vehicle which was seen carrying the male suspect and the woman. It was registered to the woman, who lived with Talley in Georgia.

According to documents, they spoke to the woman, who said she was with her boyfriend, Talley, in Orlando for her birthday on March 31. They had been dating for four to six months, living together as a family, and her child called him “Daddy.”

She said she was trying to get away from Talley at the time of the still images she was shown, and he would not let her go, authorities said.

The woman said she could not recall everything amid drinking that night, but she remembered that a man approached, said something to Jordan. Talley and the man “squared off to each other and Jordan punched him.”

In a post-Miranda interview, Talley allegedly said that he was in Orlando over the weekend for his girlfriend’s birthday.

He identified himself in a still image from surveillance, investigators said. He allegedly said his girlfriend was drunk and he was having to help her walk to their car.

Detectives confronted him, saying footage showed him throwing her to the ground and stopping her from leaving. He allegedly answered that she was telling him to leave her alone and she was trying to walk away, “but he did not want to lose track of her in a city they were not familiar with.”

“Jordan originally stated that when Donald approached, Donald had raised his fists as if to fight,” authorities wrote. “Jordan stood and demonstrated this. Detectives explained that video and surveillance cameras in the area do not show that happening.”

Jordan allegedly admitted he did not see the man raise his fists, but his own girlfriend told him after the fact that she had witnessed it.

“Jordan admitted to punching Donald and putting him to sleep, then walking off to find their car,” authorities said. “Jordan stated he was not in fear for his life or safety, even stating he is not afraid of anything.”

Storie, who died on April 23, would have turned 65 on May 5.
