China has lifted bans on beef shipments from five major Australian meat producers.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt confirmed the suspensions were lifted by Chinese authorities overnight with immediate effect, the ABC reports.

“We had already seen a couple of other processing operations have their trade bans lifted, but now [it’s] another five,” he said.

“That is fantastic news for the cattle producers, for the meat processing industry and for the workers in those industries.”

The abattoirs that were suspended are in New South Wales and Queensland.

They had been trading in about $1 billion worth of beef when they were hit by suspensions due to technical reasons.

Two Australian exporters remain on the suspended list.

This is a developing story, more to come.
