A 34-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stabbing a police officer in the head with a 30cm kitchen knife in Sydney’s CBD.

Constable Elvis Poa, 35, and another officer from Kings Cross Police Area Command were on traffic duties at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets, near Hyde Park, when he was allegedly stabbed by the man shortly after 1pm on Sunday.

The man approached Constable Poa from behind and allegedly stabbed him up to three times in the head with a 30cm.

Constable Poa suffered several fractures to his skull and was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, where he remains in a stable condition.

Footage filmed by shocked witnesses showed several officers, including the injured policeman, chased the alleged attacker in the park and confronted him.

The knifeman, who was brandishing the kitchen knife, allegedly demanded police shoot him.

The officer and his female colleague were heard yelling several times at the man to drop the weapon, as they approached before one used a taser to subdue the man.

The man was arrested on the corner of Bathurst and Elizabeth streets and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

After being released from hospital, he was then taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with cause wounding and grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.
