Netflix has confirmed that its popular Australian teen drama Heartbreak High has been renewed for a third – and final – series.

The series is a contemporary update of the iconic 90s show and last month season two of the show achieved a whopping 2.3million views in the week of its premiere.

However, on Friday, a Netflix representative said that while the show would return for a third season, it would be its final one.

‘Renewing Heartbreak High for its final season is a major point of pride for us at Netflix,’ said director of content ANZ, Que Minh Luu.

‘It has been a joy to work with the utterly cooked creative minds behind our favourite Aussie Young Adult show and to bring our stories, culture and in-jokes to all the fans here at home and throughout the world. Now we get to see what happens next!’

The second season of the Netflix reboot of Heartbreak High was released in April and quickly became one of the top ten most-watched shows in the world.

Shortly after its release in 2022, it was the number one most-viewed program in Australia and seven in the global Top 10 English TV show list.

It also soared to the top ten most-viewed shows in over 24 countries, including the UK and France.

Heartbreak High season two is an eight-episode limited series and follows the main characters as they continue their studies at Hartley High.

In October 2022, Netflix confirmed the show would be getting a second season after the first was a smash hit with viewers.

The reboot of the popular 1990s TV series of the same name reached a massive 42.2 million viewing hours in just three weeks.

While its popularity in Australia was expected, Netflix bosses were apparently surprised when it reached the top ten in more than 40 countries around the world.

The original Heartbreak High (1994-1999) was set in the fictional Hartley High, with plots tackling racism, human rights and other real-life issues.

It made household names out of its stars, including Callan Mulvey, who played bad boy Bogdan Drazic, and Home and Away veteran Ada Nicodemou.
