Western Australian surfers preparing for the Olympic Games in Brisbane 2032 will soon be training at Perth’s new surf park slated for Perth’s south thanks to a new agreement between Surfing WA and the park’s owner.
The park in Cockburn will boast an impressive pool the size of Optus Stadium, capable of generating 30 different distinct wave types, allowing surfers to optimise their training in focused sessions.
“What the Perth wave park will produce is consistent waves of that high quality that athletes are going to be able to do (all the training that they need to) in a 45-minute session,” Surfing WA CEO Mark Lane, said
The $100 million facility will be able to accommodate up to 80 surfers simultaneously, catering to individuals of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals.
The park has taken 10 years to get off the ground, with opposition to the first proposed location in Melville.
The Cockburn site is also causing controversy. Conservation activists say the land which will need to be cleared is a feeding ground for endangered black cockatoos.
But developer Aventuur has defended the location.
“We’re very comfortable that this is the right location and we’re doing the right thing to look after the environment as well,” chairman and chief development officer Andrew Ross said.
Construction of the Perth Surf Park is projected to be completed by mid-2026, and open for public access later that year.
