A controversial move by Bunnings has sparked division among fans of the hardware giant’s beloved sausage sizzle.

Sausage sizzles have been a feature of a weekend trip to Bunnings for more than 25 years, with not-for-profits, community groups, and charities using them as an opportunity to fundraise.

Bunnings has said it’s now taking a “common sense approach” to its iconic snags by encouraging the use of sliced bread, rather than bread rolls.

“[We] encourage community groups hosting a sausage sizzle to serve sausages in slices of bread to ensure our offer is consistent as possible across all stores,” the hardware giant said in a statement this week.

The decision has split Bunnings fans, with listeners phoning in to 2GB this morning to voice their opinion.

Listener Sandy told Ben Fordham Live host Mark Levy bread rolls “were the much better option”.

“The slices of bread are way too soggy when you put your mustard and onion and sauce on,” she said.

“There’s nothing better than a nice, crisp crunchy bread roll.”

She argued bread rolls made room for an extra sausage, something a slice of bread could not accommodate.

“If you want two sausages, you get to pay more and that goes back into the community,” she said.

But listener Seb called in and refused to take sides.

“Why not both?” he said.

“Give me one of each mate.”

Bunnings supplies the gas bottle, marquee and all other items required for a barbecue setup.

All other supplies such as bread, sausages and drinks are provided by community groups.
