A man has died in a fire that tore through a Townsville home , destroying it from the inside out.

Neighbours suffered burns in their attempts to save anyone inside the Hermit Park home in Townsville’s south, but were unsuccessful.

The body of a man was later found inside the destroyed home.

Police are working to identify him and the cause of the fire.

A female who also lives at the residence was found safely elsewhere.

A firefighter suffering smoke inhalation and several neighbours with burns were taken to hospital.
