Now Pixies are one woman down after long-time bassist Paz Lenchantin left after a decade.

Paz joined the band in 2014 but the impromptu nature of her exit – and her specific wording in her statement – has sparked speculation of a feud.

For its part, Pixies released a statement which read: “Lenchantin has exited the band to concentrate on her own projects.

“We are grateful for Paz’s contributions, and wish her all the best going forward.’

She is rumoured to be replaced by Emma Richardson.

The alt rock band originally consisted of Black Francis (vocals and guitar), Joey Santiago (guitar), Dave Lovering (drums) and Kim Deal (bass and vocals).

Kim left in 2013, with Paz welcomed a year later.

Yet it was Paz’s own statement, released to Rolling Stone Magazine, which raised eyebrows.

She told the publication: “It has been a dream of dreams these past 10 years to have been accepted as a Pixie by the band and by fans and an honour to have contributed to the Pixies legacy.

“My departure is a bit of a surprise to me as it is to many, but it looks like they have a solid plan figured out which in turn has pushed me to move onwards onto new projects that I am excited about.”

It remains to be seen whether further details will emerge on the band split.

Pixies released four strikingly original albums between 1988 and 1991.

These included Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde, noted for their combinations of menace and beauty, of loud and quiet, of dissonance and harmony.

Back in 2022 they played a huge gig in Glasgow.

Just three years earlier, Black Francis opened up to The Sun about the group’s new material.

He also told how he finds hitting the road an outlet for his more extrovert tendencies.

“Arrested development has mutated into this nice break from the routine of domesticity,” said the well-spoken New Englander.

“This is our little world. No one else can come into it, no one can judge it. We’re bringing home the money so no one can question it. Everyone can f*** off and leave us alone!”
