Jennifer Abel, a Canadian, used to be a diver. She split a bronze medal in the 3 m synchro diving event with Emilie Heymans in the Summer Olympics 2012 and a silver medal with Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu in the Summer Olympics 2020.
She has won three times each in the 3m and 3m synchronized springboard events at the Pan American Games and four times in the 1m and 3m synchronized springboard events at the Commonwealth Games.
With ten medals in the FINA World Championships, she also broke the record for the most medals won by a Canadian in diving at the world level.
At five years old, she started diving and participated in her first competition at six.
Her senior international debut came at the 2006 FINA Grand Prix in Madrid when she and Carol-Ann Ware earned a silver medal in the 10m synchro.

They supported and mentored their daughter on the mental side of the sport, even though they could not teach her the technical aspects.
“My mom told me to think about my favorite cartoon character, Mickey Mouse when I was young and facing a difficult dive,” Abel said.
“She told me to picture him in the same bathing suit as me, moving in the same way, and that helped me to relax.”
Abel also recalls an instance in which she overcame a problematic dive because of her father’s unwavering support.
On difficult days, such steadfast support from parents is quite valuable. “Everyone aspires to be the best, but we can’t always be there,” adds Abel.
