READ IT: Indictment for Suspected Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann

Accused Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann was at a Long Island court Tuesday, marking his first court appearance since his indictment last month for the murder of a fourth woman.

Heuremann, 60, entered the Suffolk County Courthouse in Riverhead before Justice Timothy Mazzei for an update on his case. The hearing follows a previous hearing in which Heuremann pleaded not guilty to the 2007 murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25.

Heuremann’s lawyer, Michael Brown, told the court that Heuremann “is feeling lonely and depressed” at the Riverhead jail, where he remains in isolation without bail, News 12 reports.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, in July, police arrested Heuermann in Manhattan for the 2009 and 2010 murders of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27. Earlier this month, he was charged with Brainard-Barnes’ murder.

Officials said Brainard-Barnes and the three other victims were found wrapped in burlap and buried near each other at New York’s Gilgo Beach. All four women were reportedly advertising as sex workers when they vanished.

During the hearing, the prosecution provided the defense with three terabytes of data related to the case. The data comprised 2,500 pages of reports and almost 3,000 tips extracted from the Suffolk County police logs.

Brown said that the information might have a tip for another possible suspect in the case that the former DA had previously considered charging. The defense said it plans to review the leads.

The defendant’s estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, was not present at the latest hearing. Heuremann’s next court hearing is scheduled for April 17.
