Police have arrested a man in Sydney after a more than ten-hour stand-off in which a woman and a baby were taken hostage within an apartment complex.

Specialist police this morning forced their way into the home on Belvoir Street, Surry Hills and arrested the 36-year-old.

It comes after the alleged victims were first taken hostage at about 9.30pm.

Specialist police, including negotiators, have been on scene and police said there was no threat to the wider community.

Police closed off several nearby local roads and members of the public were being told to avoid the area.

Police said the woman and baby were unharmed and being assessed by paramedics.

The man has been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital and is under police guard.
