A young woman has been killed and three others are seriously injured after a school bus with no students on board collided with a car north of Adelaide.

Emergency services went to the intersection of Mallala Road and Navvy Hill Road at Korunye near Two Wells, about 50kms north of the CBD, at 7.15 am after reports of the crash.

It’s believed the bus driver had just started his school run and was minutes away from picking up his first student before the crash.

South Australia Police said a Fuso bus had collided with a Ford sedan, with both cars being knocked off the road.

Crews worked to free the three people inside the sedan before they were flown to hospital for treatment.

The bus driver’s pregnant wife rushed to his side while he was being treated by paramedics at the scene.

“I think he’s in shock, he’s gone to hospital,” Julian Roeger from Kanga Coachlines said.

“I’m glad there were no students on board, no children, that there was the driver and he is good… as good as can be,” Roeger said.

Earlier, SA Police said the 23-year-old woman who died at the scene was from Elizabeth North.

“The driver of the sedan, a 22-year-old Freeling man and the other passenger, a 19-year-old Davoren Park woman were flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment, with the passenger being treated for serious injuries,” SA Police said in a statement.

The 36-year-old bus driver was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital with minor injuries.

The road was closed for several hours while Major Crash investigators assessed the scene.

Investigations are continuing.
