Victorian emergency services have warned that flash flooding and thunderstorms are “highly likely” over Sunday and into Monday.

Rain forecasts across the state predict totals of around 150 millimeters of rain, but with catchments already filled by last week’s downpours, severe storms could bring upwards of 200 millimetres of rain.

The state’s Emergency Management Commissioner Rick Nugent, warned that an extreme weather event was likely start in the north-west and the south-west before moving across through central, north-central and the east of the state.

Victorians were urged to prepare for higher levels of rain, particularly those living in flood-prone areas.

The commissioner said that the past few weeks had already seen significant amounts of rain that had filled the catchment areas of many of the state’s waterways.

“It’s highly likely that there will be flash floods in flood-prone areas,” he said.

“If you’re living in a flood-prone area, please make the necessary plans.”

He added a plea for drivers to avoid floodwaters: “You driving a car, not a boat,” he said.

A spokesman from the Bureau of the Meteorology said “We’re going to see widespread rain and thunderstorm activity developing over western parts of the state throughout the Sunday morning and then through the rest of the day.”

The Bureau also issued a flood watch warning for most of central and Northern Victoria.
