A woman has died and a 13-year-old boy is fighting for life after a car crash in northern New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to Big River Way at Swan Creek, about 10km from Grafton, at about 5.30pm yesterday following reports a semi-trailer collided with a car.

The driver of the car, a 65-year-old woman, died at the scene.

Her passenger, a 13-year-old boy, was treated by paramedics before being taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 36-year-old man, was uninjured and taken to Grafton Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

Police have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
