Ana was well known in Mexican cinema and was described as a “leading actress” following her death.

The national Institute of Fine Arts and Literature announced her passing on Sunday afternoon.

They wrote on X/Twitter: “With deep sadness we regret the sensitive death of the leading actress Ana Ofelia Murguía, who was part of the stable cast of the @CNTeatromx of #INBAL and whose artistic career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico.

“We send condolences and lovingly hug her family and friends.”

It is not clear yet how she died.

Some users on social media expressed their sadness at her death.

One wrote: “Wonderful woman and very talented actress”.

Another said: “RIP Ana Ofelia. Huge loss”.

And a third echoed: “One of the best actresses this country has ever produced.

“Her film resume is impressive.”

Ana was born in Mexico in 1933.

She reportedly did not have a huge number of leading roles during her career but was still highly regarded in Mexican film for the quality of her work.

In April 2023 she was given a medal in recognition of her contributions to the industry.

Over the course of her career she was reportedly nominated for 14 different awards and won nine.

Coco, perhaps her most widely-known piece of work, is an animated film set in Mexico.

It was inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, and involved heavy research in the country for the role.

It was the first film with a nine digit budget that featured an all-Latino main cast.
