Rips are the number one hazard at Australia’s beaches, causing about 21 deaths each year, but they can be difficult to spot.

“Look for where the waves are breaking consistently, then look to each side where they do not break consistently. Those areas are rip currents,” Life Saving Victoria’s Liam Krige said.

Other key signs to look for are:

  • Deeper and/or darker water
  • Fewer breaking waves
  • Sandy-coloured water extending beyond the surf zone
  • Debris or seaweed gathering
  • Significant water movement
