An XL Bully has been seized today and two people have been arrested after the hound mauled a puppy to death in a horror attack after escaping a house.

The ‘out of control’ mutt attacked a Chihuahua being taken for a morning walk on Charles Street, Skellow, Doncaster.

Armed officers were called at around 10.20am and seized the beast, which was believed to have escaped from a nearby property. The dog is currently in police kennels.

The puppy was rushed to the vets but had to be put down due to its injuries.

Two people, a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, have been arrested on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control.

Chief Inspector Emma Cheney said: ‘Over the Christmas and New Year people will be out enjoying their days off, walking their dogs.

‘As an owner you are responsible for your dog’s actions, whether that be within your home or a public place.

‘If your dog causes fear or harm, it will be you, the owner who is held accountable and, in some cases, put before the courts.

‘Irresponsible dog ownership is costing dog’s lives and causing serious injury to members of the public and their loved pets. This will not be tolerated within South Yorkshire.

‘Please think ahead this festive season, we see many people enjoying the bank holidays with walks in parks.

‘Keep your dog under control, on a lead and if it becomes easily stressed, you may choose to walk your dog during quieter periods.

‘Take the time to ensure your garden is secure and your gate locks to your dog cannot escape.’

The attack comes just days before the breed is added to the list of banned dogs in England and Wales.

The legislation comes into force on December 31. XL Bully owners will have to apply to have their pets exempt from the crackdown – which means they would have to pay £92.40 for a certificate and the dog would need to be microchipped and neutered, among other rules.
