One woman is dead while another is assisting police with their inquiries following a fatal stabbing in an affluent riverside suburb days out from Christmas.

Police were called to a home in Oxford Street, Hamilton in Brisbane’s north-east around 8.45am on Thursday following reports of a disturbance.

A critically injured woman aged in her 40s suffering from several stab wounds was treated by paramedics at the scene.

She was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Homicide detectives have set up a crime scene at the home and launched an investigation.

Forensic officers have also arrived on scene. 

A 55-year-old woman is currently assisting police with their inquiries. 

‘Police will allege the two women were known to each other but not in a familial setting,’ a Queensland Police statement read.

No charges have been laid at this early stage.

Investigations are continuing.

Hamilton is one of the city’s richest suburbs known for its waterfront dining spots on the banks of the Brisbane River.

It was the second stabbing in Brisbane on Thursday morning after a man was knifed in the chest 12.5km away in Annerley in a separate incident.

He was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

The woman’s death in Hamilton was the second fatal stabbing in Australia within 24 hours.

Real estate agent Julie Seed was allegedly stabbed to death in broad daylight in Adelaide on Wednesday.

Shaun Michaels Dunk, 30, has since been charged with murder.

He will appear at Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.
