An 11-year-old boy has died after police reportedly discovered him with a shoelace around his neck on Monday at a New York City migrant shelter.

According to the New York Post, the child was found unconscious at around 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Stratford Arms Hotel in the Upper East Side. The victim was living in a hotel that allegedly prioritized migrant families over single migrants.

The death is under investigation while a medical examiner determines the cause of death. As of now, investigators do not suspect foul play.

“It is devastating to lose a child, not only for the family but for the community at the hotel,” Upper West Side Council Member Gale Brewer told West Side Rag.

The hotel is one of two shelters established in response to a surge in migrant arrivals in the city.

City officials, operating under legal mandates that require New York City to provide shelter to anyone seeking it, have turned to hotels to house busloads of international migrants seeking asylum who have been sent to the city from other states. Around Manhattan and elsewhere in the city, hotels that served tourists just a few years ago have become de facto emergency shelters. The latest is the historic Roosevelt Hotel in midtown Manhattan, which shuttered three years ago, is reopening later this week as a welcome center and shelter for asylum seekers. Earlier this year, Mayor Eric Adams said he planned to open shelters at two locations in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, including the Stratford Arms Hotel. The initiative was prompted after the New York Post reported that that the number of migrant arrivals had surpassed 74,000.

In November, the Daily Caller News Foundation interviewed dozens of migrants who revealed the city’s s attempt to push them out by offering plane tickets to other states or countries. Many migrants, however, are reluctant to leave the city.

The story is developing. Check back for updates.
