The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for the state, including Sydney’s west, with the mercury expected to nudge 40 degrees over coming days.
The Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina, Lower Western and Upper Western Districts have been warned to expect severe heatwave conditions up to Thursday.
“Maximum temperatures in the high thirties and low forties, reaching the high twenties to mid thirties over higher terrain. Overnight minimum temperatures in the low to mid twenties, reaching the high teens to low twenties over higher terrain,” the bureau said in its latest update today.
“Severe heatwave conditions are continuing across parts of NSW over the next few days, contracting to smaller, localised areas in the east later in the week.”
Batemans Bay, Bega, Cobar, Condobolin, Dubbo, Mudgee, Nerrandera, Orange, Parkes and West Wyalong are likely to be impacted.

The fresh blast of scorching weather comes after the mercury climbed to 43 degrees in Sydney on Saturday.
Temperatures will begin climbing today in western Sydney, with Penrith heading for a top temperature of 32 degrees, 31 degrees in Blacktown and 30 degrees for Campbelltown. But the town of Hay in the Riverina region can expect scorching conditions with a forecast top of 42 degrees.
SafeWork NSW is urging the state’s tradies and other outdoor workers to take their break in the hottest part of the day.
The wild weather over past days brought more than 20,000 lightning bolts, 90km/h gusts of wind and Adelaide has already received double the average monthly rainfall for December.
Conditions are forecast to ease today.
