Jodie Jewell, 55, was allegedly shot dead by her husband Kevin Jewell, 55, at their Modbury East home between 6pm and 6.10pm on yesterday.
Emergency services were called by Ms Jewell’s friend who became concerned after not hearing from Ms Jewell for a while.
”Jodie had reported to the friend in recent times she had been the victim of domestic violence that had never been reported to authorities,” Detective Superintendent Des Bray said.
When police arrived, they found Ms Jewell dead and her husband nowhere to be found.
Police today obtained an arrest warrant for Mr Jewell on a murder charge.
Bray said Mr Jewell lived in the Modbury North home with Ms Jewell and their daughter but he lived upstairs in the house and the women lived downstairs.
He added they had been estranged for a period of time.
Police are hunting for Mr Jewell who is believed to be armed with a gun – he was a licenced firearm holder – and ammunition.
“He is considered armed and is considered dangerous and should not be approached,” Bray said.
He was last seen at 7.28pm about five kilometres outside of Port Wakefield and heading north in his white 2008 Mitsubishi Triton with the registration XTN167.

Mr Jewell has not been seen since.
Bray said the ute has a distinctive check plate tray on the rear with a large toolbox behind the driver’s cabin.
Mr Jewell is of an average build about 90kg, about 178cm tall with a scruffy appearance.
Prior to the alleged murder, Mr Jewell was seen loading the truck with a number of items including rucksacks and eskies.
He is known to enjoy camping and hunting and is comfortable setting up in the bush.
Bray made an appeal to Mr Jewell if he was watching the press conference.
“Kevin you can’t undo what has been done last night and a warrant has been issued for your arrest,” he said.
“We are actively looking for you and we will locate you.
“I encourage you without any delay to engage with a solicitor and negotiate your safe surrender to police.”
Anyone who sees Mr Jewell or the car is urged to contact police immediately and not approach him.
