A woman’s body has been found in the coalmining town of Muswellbrook, in the Hunter Valley region about three hours’ north-west of Sydney. 

NSW Police launched a critical incident investigation into her death on Tuesday morning after the body was found during a welfare check. 

A crime scene has been established at the address on Sydney Street and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death has begun.

Strike Force Llangollen is carrying out the investigation, with assistance from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.

A critical incident team from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District will investigate all other circumstances surrounding the incident.

The woman was in her 60s.
