A Michigan man was arrested after he allegedly made a post on social media that threatened violence toward Palestinian Americans in Dearborn, a city near Detroit that has one of the highest populations of Arab Americans in the U.S.
Carl David Mintz, 39, is facing one felony count of threat of terrorism and a misdemeanor count of malicious use of a telecom device, the Dearborn Police Department said in a press release.
Police began investigating last Wednesday when they received an anonymous tip about a post that Mintz allegedly made online. He was arrested in his home in nearby Farmington Hills on Thursday.
“Threats of violence against our community will not be tolerated. We are pleased to see that the charges filed this weekend reflect the severity of the message of hate that this individual chose to post online last week,” Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud said in a statement.

As part of his bond conditions, Mintz was assigned a GPS tether device and was banned from possessing weapons and using the internet.
“We take all threats very seriously. Although we are currently unaware of any further credible threats, we have increased police patrols across the city and at all places of worship in the interest of the public safety and security of Dearborn’s residents, workers, and visitors,” said Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin.
Dearborn has one of the largest Arab American populations in the U.S., accounting for about 42% of the city’s population. In 2021 the city elected its first Arab American mayor.
The arrest comes as the war between Hamas and Israel rages on in the Middle East nearly two weeks after the terrorist organization launched a sneak attack on the country. It also comes as an Illinois landlord allegedly stabbed a woman and her 6-year-old son because they were Muslim in what officials a senseless and cowardly act of violence. The boy, Wadea Al-Fayoume, died while the mother Hanaan Shahin suffered serious injuries. Joseph M. Czuba, 71, is facing a murder charge while the Department of Justice is opening a hate crime investigation.
