I just got back from Kansas City, MO last night.

Margaret and I went there to help bury my mother-in-law in Sedalia, where her Irish ancestors settled and her mother is buried. Margaret’s brother, wife, and two boys met us there, as did Margaret’s dad. It was both a happy and a sad occasion. It was the first time we had all been together in years, and her nephews have grown so much.

Margaret’s dad, who is 89, is still sharp as a tack and basked in the glow of family love, particularly his grandsons.

There was no rushed planning for the funeral, as Cathy died in February and was cremated. This allowed Margaret to plan and execute things just as her mother wanted. It was beautiful. The church was not the modern-style “theatre in the round” found in Catholic Churches today. It was an old-style German-Catholic church in which the area’s residents fought and won to keep it traditional.

Cathy would have approved.

The trip was a good reminder that putting off those family get-togethers until “sometime soon” when “it is more convenient” is a mistake. While I think of my father-in-law as immortal, I may be mistaken about that. And seeing him enjoy spending time with his grandsons was a blessing.

Rituals such as funerals are punctuation marks. Life often seems like a chaotic series of events, and we all need breathing room in order to give meaning to the chaos. Life, like writing, needs commas, periods, and new paragraphs in order to be coherent.
