A youth pastor and teacher in the US state of Kansas has been charged with attempted murder after a house fire.

Matthew Lee Richards, 41, was charged with five counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated arson after last Saturday’s house fire at Goode Estates in Shawnee County, Kansas City.

Richards has been identified as the father and husband of the victims.

Early on Saturday, police and firefighters responded to reports of a house fire and disturbance.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a fire in the basement of the home and were able to quickly extinguish it.

Richards’ wife and children sustained laceration injuries, leaving the mother and two of the children in hospital receiving treatment.

The 19-year-old and two other younger children have been released from the hospital.

Richards is scheduled to front court on Monday.
