I will be hitting my 1st anniversary as a writer at Hot Air on Tuesday.

That is something of a minor miracle. By now I figured Ed would have found an excuse to fire me, but apparently, his standards are lower than I expected.

I can live with that.

When Ed offered me the job of writing for Hot Air I was surprised. I almost didn’t apply for an idiotic reason: I have known Ed for a long time and didn’t want to put him in a tough spot if he decided not to hire me. I valued my friendship with Ed and didn’t want to put any strain on that.

My wife told me that was stupid, and I listened to my wife as I should. I applied. Ed went against his better judgment, and the rest is history.

I think it worked out well for both of us, although I got the better end of the deal. I love writing, have a lot to say, and somebody is paying me to say them. It’s hard to complain.

Later this month I will be taking a week off from writing to decompress, traveling in Utah with my dad. I had actually planned a similar trip when the job landed in my lap and I had to cancel that one. It will be good to forget about politics and the culture and just enjoy the scenery.

Sunday Smiles doesn’t serve the same purpose as unplugging from the insanity, but it does lessen the sting by making fun of it.
