It was the perfect meal, the polite chatter flowed smoothly into more daring conversation, your eyes locked onto his, he held your stare… until the bill arrived.

When it comes to dating, that awkward moment when the waiter arrives with the credit card reader can perhaps tell you more about the other person than any amount preceding charm and wit.

Do you split it? Offer to pay? Damn it, shouldn’t he pay?

A TikToker has sparked a heated debate online after admitting she got the ‘ick’ from her date who didn’t pay his half of the bill

One TikTok influencer has sparked a heated debate after admitting she gets the ‘ick’ when her date doesn’t pay his part.

Ashleigh Nekeman, from Brisbane, has added to the ongoing dating discussion on the app concerning dating etiquette.

Taking to her account @ashleighnekeman, she recalled a recent date about a guy she met on Hinge, who left her disappointed as he let her foot the bill.

In the video, the dissatisfied 29-year-old told her followers this was her fourth date with the guy and she suggested going for massages and afterwards they both decided to get some sushi.

Detailing the encounter, she said: ‘So we have our lunch and I’m still trying to figure out do I actually like this guy or what’s going on.

‘Then it comes to paying for our meal and the lady asks us ‘how would you like to pay?’ and he straight up says lets split it and I was just a little bit like… okay.’

She explained that the total of the bill came to $40 and on their other dates they had both paid their way.

Nevertheless, they told the server that they would pay their half, but found she had trouble splitting it.

She continued: ‘She was struggling with the bill and I just say to her ‘if it’s easier we can pay together and she says yes please.’

‘And I look at him and he’s not looking and he’s not offering to pay so I was like okay well I’ll pay for it.’

Ashleigh explained she was even more put off when her date didn’t ask her for her bank details to transfer the money afterwards.

‘So I have the ick now and he walks me to my car and goes in for a kiss and I make up an excuse and make up an excuse like ‘Oh sorry I just ate sushi I’m not going to kiss you,’ she added.

Finally, she wrapped up the video by asking her followers: ‘Am I just asking for too much for someone to pay for food when we’re on a date?’

The video has caused quite the stir, with many in disagreement with Ashleigh in the comments.

Gaining over 112,000 views and hundreds of comments, one person wrote: ‘So you’re broke, just say it and move on to another guy who will pay for your food that you’re eating.’

While others, more sympathetic to Ashleigh’s case said: ‘The ick is valid.’

Another agreed: ‘Runnnnnn babe! A real man will provide no matter what. If he can’t even buy you a plate of food then he’s a waste of energy.’

Another user wrote: ‘Him wanting to split the bill isn’t necessarily a red flag. But him not paying you back is.’
