Fired South Carolina Youth Pastor Faces 91 Sex Crimes Charges Against 80 Victims

A former South Carolina church youth pastor now faces 91 criminal sex charges in two counties after an extensive investigation added more counts onto previous charges filed against him in Greenville and Greenwood Counties.

The 20 new counts charge Daniel Kellan Mayfield, 35, with voyeurism and sexual exploitation of a minor, the Greenville News said.

Mayfield was first arrested in Greenwood County on May 26, where he was caught filming a woman showering.

First Baptist Church Gowensville fired Mayfield on May 27 after he had worked with the church since 2016.

The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. Many of the warrants say that Mayfield filmed the victims in changing rooms or bathrooms while in his official capacity as youth pastor. Others say he filmed victims at weddings while either providing videography services or serving as representative of the church.

Investigators have identified at least 80 victims willing to prosecute, according to Greenville County Lt. Ryan Flood, who said that another half dozen have declined to prosecute. More than half of the warrants identify the victims as minors.

The warrants say Mayfield told Greenwood County deputies he owned the recordings on his electronic devices for explicit sexual purposes reportedly confessed to filming the woman in the shower on May 26.

“This was a complete and total shock to everyone who knew him, from parents to volunteers to students to family and close friends,” First Baptist Church Gowensville Senior Pastor Josh Phillips said on July 11. “Unfortunately these things usually are surprises. It is the people you do not expect.”

Mayfield does not yet have a court date.
