A strong cold front is set to sweep across south-east Australia today and tomorrow, bringing showers, strong winds and highland snow in several states.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings for damaging winds for parts of Victoria and Tasmania today.

Wind gusts of about 90 km/h are expected over the Otways, Mornington Peninsula and central ranges, including Melbourne’s far northern suburbs, this morning, while winds of 100km/h are possible in central Tasmania.

Parts of Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, the ACT and Western Australia will all get showers over the next two days, but most areas will avoid any heavy rain, according to Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino.

Fresh snow is expected in Tasmania on Thursday night and Friday morning, and a light dusting is expected on mainland Alps.

Melbourne is forecast to reach just a top of 13 degrees today and Canberra just 12 degrees, while Sydney should get to 19 degrees and Adelaide to 16 degrees.

Brisbane is forecast to reach 22 degrees and Hobart 14 degrees.
