Leader of Black Lives Matter Calgary charged with a hate crime

The head of Black Lives Matter Calgary has been charged with a hate crime for allegedly blocking access to a Catholic Church/school. The incident happened last month.

Court records show Adora Nwofor was charged with mischief on June 2, in connection with an incident on May 26, for allegedly “wilfully obstructing and interfering” with the use of a property “primarily used for religious worship and educational purposes.”

It’s alleged she interfered with people’s use of St. Thomas Aquinas School on 26 Avenue S.W. “for reasons of bias, prejudice, or hate based on race or ethnic origin.”

Nwofor appears to be an all-purpose activist. She was the leader of a Women’s March in Calgary back in 2017.

And he leader of BLM in 2020:

This appears to be another BLM protest from 2021:

When she’s not leading protests she’s a stand up comedian. She didn’t get into this because of BLM. It was the other way around. She was doing comedy and made her way from that into activism. Make of that what you will. Here’s an interview she did for a Canadian morning show in Feb 2021.

She’s also a DEI speaker on campus.

And she’s a campaigner for abortion rights:

She led a May 2022 rally at Olympic Plaza in protest of the U.S. Supreme Court’s anticipated overturning of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortion in that country…

At the May 15, 2022, rally, Nwofor expressed concerns the U.S. decision could ultimately impact abortion rights in Canada.

So she’s obviously very busy. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any more information about what she was doing at St. Thomas Aquinas School last month or why she was trying to prevent people from entering. Her defense lawyer, Chad Haggerty, refused to comment. Maybe we’ll learn more if this goes to trial but it doesn’t sound good. Nwofor is currently out on bail and has been ordered to remain at least 100 meters from the school in question.

It’s stories like this one which have gradually pulled BLM down to it’s lowest approval rating ever. Pew Research published the results of a poll yesterday showing that support for BLM has dropped 16 points from its high in 2020.

Ten years after the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag first appeared on Twitter, about half of U.S. adults (51%) say they support the Black Lives Matter movement, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. Three years ago, following the murder of George Floyd, two-thirds [67%] expressed support for the movement…

Today, 51% of U.S. adults say they support the Black Lives Matter movement, a decrease from 56% a year ago. The share who say they strongly support the movement dropped from 26% in 2022 to 22% in the new survey.

So still majority support but just barely and opposition is now at 46%, up from 31% in June of 2020. Frankly, given the group’s connection to defund the police, one of the worst policy ideas in recent history, I’m surprised support isn’t lower. I’m guessing the recent decline can also be attributed to reports about BLM’s organizational and financial troubles which made news in right-leaning media more than it has in the mainstream.

The same survey found that support among Black Americans was fairly steady at 81 percent (88% among Black Democrats). Support is lowest among whites (42%) and especially white Republicans (14%). Overall, Hispanic and Asian respondents were at 61% and 63% respectively, so roughly in the middle.
