Who is King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands?

KING Willem-Alexander of Netherlands acceded the throne following his mother’s abdication in 2013.

He celebrated his tenth anniversary of the throne on King’s Day in Rotterdam in April.

Who is King Willem-Alexander?

Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand, 51, was born in Utrecht and is the King of the Netherlands.

He took the throne in 2013 when his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicated.

He served in the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1985 to 1987.

After his military service he studied History at Leiden University and graduated with an MA degree in in 1993.

What did King Willem-Alexander do before he became king?

King Willem-Alexander held several high profile roles relating to sport and international water management.

Before he became king he was a member of the International Olympic Committee from 1998 to 2013.

He was also chairman of the Advisory Committee on Water to the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment from 2004 to 2013.

And from 2006 to 2013 he was the chairman of the Secretary-General of the United Nations’ Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.

It was revealed in May 2017 the the king had been secretly piloting commercial KLM planes for 21 years flying millions of holidaymakers around the world.

When did King Willem-Alexander marry Queen Maxima?

King Willem married Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti in 2002 in Amsterdam.

Argentinian Máxima was previously an investment banker in New York.

The couple have three daughters – Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange, 19, Princess Alexia, 17, and Princess Ariane, 15.

King Willem expressed his concern regarding his children and social media stating they “see everything”.

He revealed his concern Through the eyes of the King podcast on April 6 admitting he worries about online trolling but fortunately has “very open discussions” with all three of his daughters.
