Tina Turner shared heartbreaking story about the start of her career in one of her final interviews before death at 83

TINA Turner may have been the queen of rock n’ roll, but that didn’t mean the star was free of insecurities about her body.

In one of her final interviews, the musician said her iconic voice was sometimes overshadowed by the attention she received for her legs.

Tina died at her home in Switzerland on Wednesday at age 83, her representative confirmed.

She retired from performing in 2009 after a career that spanned five decades.

“Sometimes I think I’m as famous for my legs as much as my voice,” Tine told The Sun in an interview last month.

“I only had my legs on show so much as it made it much easier to dance,” she said.

“Then it became part of my style.”

But in a way, this objectification made Tina feel more comfortable with her appearance.

“When I was younger I never felt confident about any part of my body,” she said.

“But with all the attention my legs received, I realized they must be OK!”

At the time of the interview, Tina was also celebrating the fifth anniversary of a musical which tells the story of her life.

Although the two had many hit singles together like A Fool in Love and It’s Gonna Work Out Fine, Tina said he was deeply abusive.

The couple had four children together, two of whom outlived their mother.

Tina left Ike in 1976 with just a few cents in her pocket, but that wasn’t the end of her career.

She went on to flourish as a solo artist in the 1980s and 1990s with hits like What’s Love Got to Do with It and I Don’t Wanna Fight.

Tina shared some more details about faith in another interview with Vogue shortly before her death.

“My Buddhist beliefs are my foundation,” she said.

“The rituals that I’ve had since the early days are still with me. That includes spending time chanting in my little prayer room every day.”

Tina also recalled how an iconic outfit made her realize she had made it big around the release of her 1984 album Private Dancer.

“My look was almost like a butterfly suddenly appearing – but in a leather mini dress!” she said.

“I felt very confident that my look was part of finally starting to achieve my goal… to be the first Black rock n’ roll singer to fill stadiums around the world.”

The singer also reflected on how the advent of social media has drastically changed what it’s like to be a prominent musician or public figure in general.

“After so many years in the public eye, I do treasure my privacy now,” Tina said.

“But I think if I was younger I’m sure I would have loved being able to see all the musicians I admired and follow the fashion around the world,” she added.

“I do think the daily pressures on artists now are so much greater as a result – there is nowhere to catch your breath and center in private.”
