Seven children have been rushed to hospital after two school buses packed with dozens of students collided in the Blue Mountains.

One bus with 15 passengers and a second bus with 10 passengers – collided on the Great Western Highway near Sun Valley Rd at Warrimoo west of Sydney around 4.15pm Friday.

Eleven students and two adults were treated by paramedics at the scene. 

Two children were rushed to Westmead Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.

Another five children with minor injuries were taken to Nepean Hospital along with a male bus driver who suffered a fractured shoulder. 

The children’s injuries are understood to mostly bruises and head knocks.

It’s understood passengers were thrown forward from the impact of the collision.

Firefighters were also called to the scene. 

Photos and footage from scene show the shattered windscreens of the buses involved and passengers being treated along the roadside by paramedics.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Environemtal campaigner Jon Dee was on a train when it passed the crash scene.

‘I hope the injured kids are ok – their families must be traumatised,’ he tweeted.

‘Traffic is totally blocked – in my 20 years living in the Blue Mountains it’s the biggest traffic jam I have ever seen.’

NSW Premier Chris Minns also tweeted about the crash to urge motorists to avoid the area.

The Great Western Highway was closed in both directions with local diversions in place.

Motorists urged to avoid the area and to allow extra travel time.

Westbound lanes on the highway reopened almost two hours later around 6pm. 

‘Eastbound lanes remain closed due to the bus crash at Sun Valley Rd. Continue to avoid the area as traffic remains very heavy,’ a Live Traffic NSW alert stated.

‘Heavy vehicles should delay travel or use Bells Line of Rd instead.’
