On 13 April 2023, Ralph was sent to pick up his twin siblings in the evening hours from an address in the 1100 block of NE 115th Terrace.
When he reached a home less than a block away on NE 115th Street and rang the doorbell.
Then an 84 years old man shot Ralph twice through the house’s front glass door. Neighbors found Ralph lying injured in the street and they called the police they found Ralph with at least two gunshot wounds on his head and arm.

Ralph Yarl’s suspect was identified as Andrew Daniel Lester who is 84 years old. Andrew is a resident born in Virginia. He is a former American West Airlines technician.
On 14 April 2023 in the early morning, Andrew was taken into custody for attempted assault charges and he was listed as out of custody and general release status on the same day.

His family members created a GoFundMe for Ralph which had reached more than $2 million in donations by 17 April 2023.
Initially, no charges were filed against the homeowner and he was freed from custody after being held in custody for a short time.
Later, Andrew was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. The attorney of the district said that there was a racial component to the case.

On 16 April 2023, Ralph’s father Paul stood in front of the house where Andrew lives. Paul said that he wanted justice for his son Ralph.
On 17 April 2023, Andrew was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action by Clay County’s top prosecutor. Paul said,
“This is such a relief. I’m happy. This is what we’ve been looking for. It’s here.”
Yarl’s attorney advised him not to comment on any specific charges but Zachary Thompson told that if Andrew is found guilty, Andrew will face at least 10 years and up to 30 years of life in prison.

Ralph’s father told that Ralph was released from the hospital on 16 April 2023. He is recovering at his mother’s Kansas City Home recovering. He also added,
“Ralph’s responsive. He’s responding and it’s a slow recovery, but he’s making good progress. The focus is on healing, and we haven’t reached the point of asking him to talk or walk around.”
