Catch My Drift Whitsundays owner-operator Murray Story captured footage of the spout on his boat early on Thursday morning while out on a fishing trip with some friends.

“It’s a very awesome thing to see, we’ve never seen anything like it in our lives,” he said.

“As we were getting close we saw the cloud hanging over Hook island.

“Two spikes started forming out of those clouds and away it went.”

Waterspouts are occasionally seen near the coast in the late summer and autumn when cool, unstable air passes over warmer waters.
