We Finally Know Coolio's Cause Of Death

According to Variety, Coolio died from fentanyl, which was mixed with other drugs. Coolio’s manager, Jarel Posey, confirmed the details of his autopsy to the outlet on April 6. Fentanyl is a synthetic drug that claims the lives of more than 150 people a day, per the CDC. Coolio also reportedly had phencyclidine, a hallucinogen, in his system.

Unfortunately, Coolio’s last encounter with substance use was far from his first. The “Gangsta’s Paradise” rapper had battled substance use for several years, a fact that this son acknowledged prior to his passing. “My dad was having a couple of health complications,” shared Artis Ivey III to The Sun in September. “He was taking care of those things. A lot was going on with asthma, real bad asthma.” He continued, “He was for the most part drug-free, but my dad lived for the day, everyone in life has their vices, but those vices never really affected him as a father or a man.”

In 2009, Coolio was arrested for the possession of crack, according to The Guardian. Ultimately, Coolio plead guilty and underwent rehab in an attempt to stay out of jail.
