A man and woman are in custody after a mum and her three boys were killed after their car slammed into a pole and hurtled down an embankment on a country road.

Emergency services were called to an intersection of Research Road and Toorak Road, Yanco, 7km south of Leeton in southern NSW, around 11.15pm on Tuesday.

Police initially reported the incident as a single-vehicle crash after the car is believed to have collided with a pole before deflecting down an embankment, flipping onto its roof and coming to a stop in a water channel.

The three children, aged 10, 11 and 12, and their 36-year-old mother died before emergency services arrived.

Crash investigators spoke to a 32-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman following the fatal crash.

They were subsequently arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station where they remain in custody.
