A little girl has suffered injuries to the back of her head after being mauled by a dingo on Fraser Island, now known as K’gari.

A rescue helicopter was deployed to the island, located along the southeastern coast of Queensland’s Wide Bay-Burnett area, just after 4pm on Tuesday.

The little girl, believed to be about six years old, sustained wounds to her hands and the back of her head after the attack near Waddy Point.

She was flown to Hervey Bay Hospital in the rescue helicopter.

It comes just months after a five-year-old boy was hospitalised after he was ‘jumped on’ by a dingo at a campground in Fraser Island.

The attack happened as the young child was visiting Ocean Lake campground on the island, also known as K’gari, on December 18.

His dad managed to pull the dingo off his son before the child and his mother were flown from the island to Hervey Bay Airport by LifeFlight helicopter.

The pair were then driven to hospital.

The attack came just weeks after the Queensland government warned of increased dingo activity and finished a new seven-kilometre fence that wraps around the nearby Orchid Beach township.

The area is known as a hotspot for dingo attacks with at least a dozen incidents recorded in the last 20 years.

The region has been plagued with dingo attacks for decades including nine-year-old Clinton Gage who was killed by two dingoes near Waddy Point in April 2001.

His death led authorities to cull around 31 dingoes on K’gari Island, with about 200 of the wild animals believed to currently live on the island.

In 2021, a two-year-old suffered deep puncture wounds in his legs, arms, neck, shoulder and head after an attack on Orchid Beach.

The toddler had wandered outside while his family was asleep and was approached by a dingo.

The Fraser Island dingoes are the purest blooded of Australia’s dingoes and are a protected species on the island with more protection laws than any other type of dingo in the country.
