Providence’s Alyn Breed arrested after allegedly pulling gun on girlfriend

Providence men’s basketball player Alyn Breed was arrested and has been suspended indefinitely for allegedly pulling a gun on his girlfriend on Saturday.

Breed, a junior guard, has been charged with multiple firearm and domestic charges in addition to a driving without consent of the operator charge stemming from an early-morning off-campus domestic dispute, the Providence Police Department announced.

Among the charges, Breed is accused of pointing a gun at his girlfriend, according WPRI-TV in Providence.

Breed was arrested Saturday morning after police were called regarding the incident.

The 21-year-old Breed will not be allowed to participate in any athletic department-related activities during the investigation, and his profile has been removed from the team’s website.

“It was announced by the Providence Police Department that Providence College student-athlete Alyn Breed was charged with several crimes for actions that occurred off campus on Saturday, April 1,” the school said in a statement, per ESPN. “As a result of these charges, athletic director Steve Napolillo and head coach Kim English have determined that Breed is suspended from the men’s basketball team and will not be allowed to participate in any other athletic department-related activities.

“[Providence] will follow its student-conduct disciplinary process regarding this matter. At this time, there will not be any further comment.”

The other charges include unlawful entry of a home, robbery, vandalism and taking someone’s car without permission, per The Providence Journal.

Breed averaged 4.8 points and 18.5 minutes a game this season as the Friars earned a No. 11 seed in March Madness 2023, where they were eliminated in the first round by Kentucky.

It’s the first challenge in English’s tenure as head coach, which is barely over a week old.

English was hired as the team’s new head coach after his predecessor Ed Cooley left to become the head coach at Big East rival Georgetown.

English previously was the head coach at George Mason.

Breed, a native of Powder Springs, Ga., had previously announced that he plans to remain on the team despite the coaching change, but his collegiate future is now uncertain.
