A kitten that had been stuck inside the engine bay of a car that travelled all the way from Lithgow to Sydney has been saved by police. 

At 9pm last night, the driver of a BMW reported hearing cries of an animal from within their vehicle and alerted authorities. 

Officers attached to the Rescue and Bomb Disposal unit were called to Rosaline Street in Potts Point where they worked tirelessly for over two hours to set the little cat free.

Crews used airbags to lift the car and then inserted an inspection camera to locate the kitten within the car.

Police then gradually coaxed the little kitten out onto the road with the help of onlookers.

It had been stuck there for two hours on the 150km journey.

“The animal was then placed in a cage and a cat-friendly bystander took the kitten and is following up with a vet,” NSW Police said in a statement.

It’s not yet known who owns the animal but investigations to track them down are underway.
