More than $200 million in unclaimed Medicare payments is being held by Services Australia, and there’s an easy way to see if you’re entitled to some of it.

Government Services Minister Bill Shorten said the payments were owed to people whose banking details aren’t valid, usually because their Medicare account is not updated if they move house or change banks.

Tasmania, for example, has 20,000 people missing out on a collective $4 million of unpaid benefits.

Medicare is facing its biggest overhaul in 40 years, which could see funding opened to nurses and paramedics.

“Services Australia will try to contact people with held Medicare payments to let them know, however contact details are often also out of date,” he said.

Shorten said the “quickest and easiest” way to check if your Medicare details were up to date was through the myGov app released in December last year, available on the App Store and Google Play.

“If you don’t have a Medicare online account, you can set one up and link it to your myGov,” he said.

“After you update your details, Services Australia will usually pay you any unclaimed benefits within a few days.”
