Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race to sign Benfica defender Antonio Silva, with Liverpool also interested in the Portuguese wonderkid.
According to Record, the Magpies are keeping tabs on the 19-year-old centre-back, with Benfica unwilling to sell Silva unless a club is ready to match the teenager’s €100m (£89m) release clause. Yet Newcastle could take an ambitious punt on the defender.
As we know, Eddie Howe’s side are one of the richest clubs in football given their PIF owners, with the Saudi Arabia regime yet to truly flex their immense financial muscle since taking over the club in 2021, but this is looking likely to change in the upcoming summer window.
With Newcastle favourites to secure a European spot, the chequebook is ready to come out to bulk up the squad, and Silva could be a landmark signing for the Toon, even with Liverpool also interested in recruiting the Benfica talent as reported by Goal.
Indeed, the defender is regarded by many as one of the best prospects in European football, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher already tipping the 19-year-old to become a ‘superstar’ player in the years to come. And for Newcastle, it makes sense why the Magpies are targeting the Portuguese prodigy.
