Chandler was born to parents William Riggs and Gina Ann Carlton Riggs, and grew up with a younger brother. He developed a strong interest in acting at an early age, and made his acting debut in musical theater in an Atlanta Fox Theatre production of “The Wizard of Oz” in 2009, when he was just nine years old, but after which he got his first two major acting breaks.
His first major role came in the film “Get Low”, in which he played the role of Tom, and was then the star in the television movie entitled “The Wrong Man”. A year later he auditioned for the role of Carl Grimes in the television show “The Walking Dead”, the series based on the comic books of the same name created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. In the show, the lead is sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes who awakens into a world overrun by zombies; Carl Grimes is Rick Grimes’ son in the show.

The show then follows Rick’s family as they form a group of survivors, with Rick thrown into a leadership role. Together they struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world filled with dangers such as zombies, and other survivors who at times present themselves as more dangerous than the zombies themselves. The show began with very high ratings, and it steadily earned popularity in the next few years, attracting the most 18 to 49 year-old viewers of any broadcast television series, plus receiving critical acclaim and nominations for several awards.
The show’s popularity created a spin-off series entitled “Fear the Walking Dead”, while the main show has been running for eight seasons with a ninth season set to debut in late 2018, and smashing numerous records, with many fans attached to Riggs’ character as he would grow up in the post-apocalyptic world. For his work, he was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actor,and would win the award in 2014 along with a Saturn Award.

Aside from “The Walking Dead”, Chandler has worked on other projects as well, including the supernatural horror film “Mercy” which is loosely based on the story “Gramma” by Stephen King. He was also a part of another horror film in 2017 – called “Keep Watching” – which also starred Bella Thorne. On television, he has also made appearances in “The Walking Dead” based talk show series called “Talking Dead”, and lent his voice in the animated show “Robot Chicken” Walking Dead special.

In 2018, televisions show runners surprised fans of “The Walking Dead” when they decided to kill-off Chandler’s character. The move came as an unexpected one as Carl Grimes in the comics – which is way ahead of the television series – has seen Carl survive up to the present day. The decision also shocked cast members involved in the show, as they had grown close over the past eight seasons. Prior to the eighth season, Chandler had decided to take a break from school for a while, to focus on his role in “The Walking Dead” not knowing that the show would eventually kill him off. Since his time with “The Walking Dead”, he has not yet been seen in any new projects. He does have an upcoming film entitled “Inherit the Viper”, which is a crime drama film starring Josh Hartnett.
