Bridgerton is an American historical fiction-romance series created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Grey’s Anatomy’s Shonda Rhimes.
The TV show is set in London during the Regency era. It chronicles the lives of the Bridgerton siblings as they attempt to navigate society, love, friendship, and rivalry.
As fans wait for season 3 to hit screens, we look back at season 2, which followed the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony Bridgerton. But who plays the charming and handsome head of household? Let’s meet Johnathan Bailey.
Who is Johnathan Bailey otherwise known as Anthony Bridgerton?
Johnathan Bailey, 33, was born Johnathan Stuart Bailey, he was born on 25 April, 1988, in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England.
His mother was an audiologist and his father was the managing director of Rowse Honey. He grew up in the neighboring village of Benson, and is the youngest of four siblings and the only son.
Bailey attended The Oratory School while taking ballet lessons. He later studied at Magdalen College School, in Oxford, under a music scholarship. Instead of attending university and drama school, Bailey secured himself a talent agent at the age of 15 years old and started his career.
Viscount and Viscountess Bridgerton
Anthony Bridgerton is the eldest Bridgerton son and the current Viscount Bridgerton. Upon the death of his father Edmund, he became the 9th Viscount Bridgerton and the head of the family.
In season 2 of Netflix’s hit show Bridgerton, the narrative focuses on Anthony. Fans watch as he navigates the dating circuit, trying to find himself a lady to become the next Viscountess. After discounting all the young ladies, Anthony sets out to marry this season’s diamond.

We are introduced to new characters Edwina and Kate Sharma, who have arrived from India with their mother to find Edwina a suitable match and husband. Kate, played by Simone Ashley, is first seen as the protective, smart, fierce, older sister of Edwina or bon as she is affectionately known.
After Edwina is crowned the season’s diamond, Anthony sets about making her his wife. However, Kate is doing everything to stop him. As Anthony courts Edwina, he starts falling in love with Kate.
After Kate wakes up from an accident that sees her knocked unconscious, the couple finally admits their feelings for one another.
The season concludes with Anthony marrying Kate, the new Viscountess.
Where you might have seen Johnathan Bailey before
Johnathan Bailey might have had an early start in his acting career, since he began acting at a young age. But, historically, he’s only played valuable supporting roles, he has rarely occupied the main spotlight. Until this season of Bridgerton. One of his only other lead television roles was in a BBC children’s show based on the life of Leonardo da Vinci.
Bailey has mostly performed in the theater, but he has had some on-screen success. In his early years, he starred in the CBBC action-adventure series Leonardo from 2011 to 2012. He was also cast in the Disney Channel musical-comedy Groove High between 2012 and 2013.
Later in life, Bailey became known for his roles in the ITV crime drama Broadchurch, the BBC satire W1A, and the Channel 4 comedy Crashing.
It wasn’t until he starred in Netflix’s Bridgerton that he was recognized. In the role of Anthony Bridgerton, Bailey became internationally recognized and held to critical acclaim.
