Is Wo Long Fallen Dynasty a soulslike? Open-world gameplay explained

The release date for when Wo Long Fallen Dynasty will come out is almost here, and it’s an incredibly exciting soulslike experience even though it is not open-world.

There are no reviews for Wo Long Fallen Dynasty as of writing, but the leaked review embargo date suggests final impressions will be delivered soon. It’s another game from the folks responsible for Nioh, Team Ninja, and it has been compared to soulslike experiences.

It looks fantastic and you will be able to explore several open areas very soon.

Is Wo Long Fallen Dynasty a soulslike?

Yes, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is a soulslike experience.

FromSoftware are famous for the soulslike genre with Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is developed by Team Ninja who are famous for Ninja Gaiden and their own soulslike franchise, Nioh.

Similar to the likes of Dark Souls and Nioh, there is no difficulty options for WLFD. There is also multiplayer modes where you can co-op with friends or invade another player’s world as an enemy.

There will also be several huge and incredibly difficult bosses for you to defeat. However, in a departure from the soulslike genre, WLFD does not feature a stamina bar.

Does it have an open-world?

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty does not have an open-world.

Although it is not open-world, Team Ninja said in an interview with WCCFTECH about story and demo feedback that areas are more open than Nioh and have many reasons to explore. The game is set in China, and it features ‘huge vistas, unique landscapes, and massive castles’.

WLFD features a jumping mechanic unlike Nioh, and Team Ninja has said it’s important to explore stages because of the morale system. However, the story is segregated into stages so players can ‘focus on the action and the intensity of battles with as fewer distractions as possible’.

While some may be disappointed by the lack of a fully explorable sandbox, Team Ninja are developing an open-world ninja game called Rise of the Ronin.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty launches on March 3rd and is available on Xbox Game Pass as part of the March 2023 day one releases that also include MLB The Show 23. Although it doesn’t launch for another day, players on Xbox can get early access by using the New Zealand release time trick.
