‘Sex Education’ was one of the few Netflix modern shows that had a huge success on the platform. Distributed by Netflix UK all over the world, the show tells the story of Otis, played by Asa Butterfield and Maeve, played by Emma Mackey, two students who help teenagers of their school with their sexuality, in exchange for money. Otis is the psychologist and Maeve is the one who finds the clients. But while making a business out of it, they also find out many things about their own sexuality and that’s where comes from the comedic point of the show.
However, it seems like one of the main characters, Maeve, who is also famous for her role in ‘Eiffel’, decided to leave the cast after Season 4 for multiple reasons. And for many fans of the show who still expect a lot of things from the character, It’s heartbreaking but it also raises a lot of questions from what she said.
The Mysterious Declaration of Emma Mackey
Emma Mackey is definitely saying goodbye to the ‘Sex Education’ role that made her famous in the industry. The French and British actress declared it during the BAFTA ceremony: “Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.” So this means Season 4 will be the last time we see Maeve on the small screen, at least in ‘Sex Education’. But this declaration raises a lot of questions and theories about the show. If Maeve is not here anymore, what will happen in Season 4?
The first reason of her leaving, can be because her character leaves the city where the show takes place, or even dies. However, It’s not really the tone of the show so let’s stay on the first possibility. Maeve had a big role in Season 3 and her relationship with the main character was deteriorating a lot. No spoilers here, don’t worry, but we can think she decides to leave the show inside the show, and that’s why Season 4 is her last one. It can be a decision from the production to introduce new characters and maybe change the formula that feels a little bit outdated.
The second reason of her leaving can also be the fact that Emma Mackey had enough of her first teenage role in the show. It’s been now four seasons that she plays Maeve and she maybe wants to start something new, because she doesn’t want to be recognized as Maeve forever, like for Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter saga. Also, it has been revealed in an interview with ‘Radio Times’ that she is “not in season four as consistently” as other seasons. So this means her character is already disappearing a little bit in Season 4 to prepare her departure at the end of the season.

Finally, the third reason of her leaving can also be because Season 4 will simply be the end of the show. Maybe the actress teased something that we didn’t think about: the end of ‘Sex Education’. Maybe this can make us think it is the right solution since the characters are growing a lot and might be graduating from their fictitious school soon. Of course, Emma Mackey can lie and say that she will not come back, and be there in season 5, but it doesn’t seem like it since many other actors who played major characters already leaved the show.
Eric, Olivia, Lyly and Ola Also Guaranteed To Leave
More hints make us think that the departure of Emma Mackey signs the end of ‘Sex Education’. The actress is not the only one leaving since Simone Ashley, Tanya Reynolds and Patricia Allison, who respectively play the roles of Olivia, Lyly and Ola said they will not be in season 4. Also, Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the role of Eric, Otis’ best friend, said he is set to leave the show at the end of season 4 too. But him, It’s because he will play the 15th Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’. He will be the first African American actor to take that role.
So next season, many characters are already missing, and while some new characters might be introduced, the possibility of the show ending after Season 4 is totally possible. However, nobody knows what will really happen after Season 4. A story to be continued… Or not.
